What official advisories say
Curfew rules in Ukraine: what travellers need to know
Most Ukrainian regions enforce a night curfew under martial law. Rules vary by oblast and change — always check the current rules for your specific region.
Finding shelter: what to do when an alert sounds
Ukraine's shelter system is well-organised. Knowing your nearest shelter before an alert saves critical time when it matters most.
Install the Air Alert app — step by step
The official Air Alert app pushes instant warnings for your region. Install it before you arrive — it could save your life.
Which regions of Ukraine are safe for travel right now?

Is Kyiv safe to visit?
Kyiv functions normally for daily life — shops, restaurants, metro, and hotels all operate. Air alerts occur regularly but shelters are well-organised and the metro serves as a major shelter network. Most travellers who visit Kyiv report it feels surprisingly normal, while also being clearly at war. Make an informed decision and follow alert protocols strictly.
What happens if there is an air alert while I am there?
Go to the nearest shelter immediately when an alert sounds. In Kyiv, the metro is the primary shelter — entrances are clearly marked. In other cities, look for designated shelter signs on buildings. Remain until the all-clear sounds. Install the Air Alert app before you arrive so you receive warnings the same moment as locals.
Do I need special travel insurance for Ukraine?
Yes — standard travel insurance almost always excludes war-risk and acts of hostility. You need a specialist policy that explicitly covers Ukraine under martial law. SafetyWing Nomad Insurance covers war risk in Ukraine. World Nomads also offers policies for Ukraine, but check the war coverage clause carefully. Do not travel without verified cover.
Are there safe western regions I can visit?
Yes. Lviv, Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Chernivtsi in western Ukraine have experienced very limited air activity and no ground fighting. Many travellers use Lviv as a base — it is close to the Polish border and has good transport links. Eastern and southern frontline oblasts (Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, parts of Zaporizhzhia) are off-limits.
Can I use my phone in Ukraine?
Yes. Ukraine has 4G coverage in all major cities and towns. Ukrainian operators (Kyivstar, Vodafone UA, lifecell) offer local SIM cards at the border and in phone shops. Alternatively, an eSIM activated before you travel is the easiest option — you keep your home number active while getting Ukrainian data instantly.
What is the curfew and does it affect me as a tourist?
Yes. Most regions enforce a night curfew, typically from around 23:00 or midnight until 05:00, though hours vary by oblast. Foreign nationals are subject to the same rules as residents. Being outside without authorisation during curfew is an offence under martial law. Plan your evenings so you are at your accommodation before curfew starts.
